What is in the scene

The planet Venus dominates the picture as a large round globe covered by wide, curved cloud bands. The cloud shapes sweep around the planet in layered arcs, giving the surface a wrapped, atmospheric appearance. A small Sun appears in the upper-right part of the scene, separated from the planet against an otherwise plain background. The composition is simple and focused, so the main features are the large cloud-covered Venus and the smaller Sun in the distance.

Venus facts

Venus is the second planet from the Sun and is similar to Earth in size. Its atmosphere is extremely dense and is made mostly of carbon dioxide, with thick clouds that contain sulfuric acid droplets. Those clouds reflect a great deal of sunlight, which is why Venus is one of the brightest natural objects in Earth's night sky. The planet has a very strong greenhouse effect, making its surface hotter than Mercury's even though Mercury is closer to the Sun. Venus also rotates very slowly and in the opposite direction from most planets in the Solar System.

Color ideas

  • Cream, pale yellow, gold, or warm beige for the broad cloud bands
  • Soft orange or light brown accents for variation across the clouds
  • Yellow, gold, or bright orange for the small Sun
  • White highlights between cloud layers
  • Deep blue, black, or purple if using a space-inspired background
