What is in the scene

The planet Mars is shown as a large round world occupying most of the composition. On the upper-left portion of the surface rises a broad shield volcano with wide, gently sloping sides. Across the rest of the visible planet are open plains and two simple impact craters. A small moon floats nearby in the upper-right part of the scene. The background is plain, so the volcanic landform, broad plains, craters, and nearby moon remain the main visual elements.

Mars facts

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is often called the Red Planet because iron minerals in its soil oxidize and give the surface a reddish appearance. Mars is home to Olympus Mons, the largest known volcano in the Solar System. Olympus Mons is a shield volcano, meaning it was built by many layers of relatively fluid lava that spread over a broad area. Mars also has many impact craters and large plains. The planet has two small natural satellites, Phobos and Deimos.

Color ideas

  • Rust red, orange, terracotta, and brown for the Martian surface
  • Darker red or brown around the volcano and crater rims
  • Pale orange, tan, or dusty beige across the broad plains
  • Gray, brown, or muted red for the small moon
  • Deep blue, black, or purple for a space-inspired background
