A close look at a flying insect
The pterosaur pauses with its head lifted and its attention fixed on the small dragonfly in front of it. Its long, thin tail stretches far behind the body and ends in a leaf-shaped vane in this drawing. A simple fern grows beside the animal, while several small stones and grass tufts sit on the otherwise open ground. The composition keeps the Dimorphodon, dragonfly, tail, fern, and ground details easy to distinguish.
Dimorphodon facts
Dimorphodon was a pterosaur rather than a dinosaur. It lived during the Early Jurassic, roughly 190 million years ago, and fossils have been found in what is now southern England. It had a relatively large head, a short neck, a long tail, and wings supported by an elongated fourth finger. Its name means “two-form tooth,” referring to different tooth shapes in its jaws. Scientists can reconstruct much of its skeleton from fossils, but its exact colors are unknown.
Color ideas for the scene
- Try tan, warm brown, gray, or muted green for the Dimorphodon.
- Use darker brown or charcoal accents along the long tail.
- Give the dragonfly a small bright accent such as blue, green, or amber.
- Make the fern olive, fresh green, or yellow-green.
- Use gray, beige, and brown for the stones and grass details.
