Easter Egg Pattern Under the Lens

A large Easter egg fills the left side of the page, decorated with bands of wavy lines and rows of round dots. In front of it, a magnifying glass with a thick round rim and a long handle leans at an angle, and curved highlights on the lens show the shine of the glass. At the bottom, a flower with rounded petals and a round center blooms beside a closed tulip and a broad leaf. The big closed shapes of the egg and the lens leave plenty of room for patterns and color.

Lenses and Wax-Drawn Egg Patterns

A magnifying glass is a convex lens, thicker in the middle than at the edges. As light passes through the curved glass it bends, so an object held close behind the lens looks larger than it really is. The English scholar Roger Bacon wrote about using curved glass to enlarge small letters for reading in the 1260s.

Some of the most detailed Easter eggs are Ukrainian pysanky. Their makers draw lines with hot beeswax using a small stylus called a kistka, then dip the egg in dyes from light to dark. The wax protects each line from the next color, and when it is melted away at the end the whole pattern appears.

Natural Colors of the Scene

  • Egg bands: pastel sky blue, lemon yellow and lilac between the wavy lines
  • Dots: a bold contrast such as red or orange
  • Magnifying glass: black or dark red rim with a wooden brown handle
  • Lens: very pale blue, with the highlight curves left white
  • Flowers: white petals with a yellow center, and a red or pink tulip
  • Leaves: spring green
Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a magnifying glass make things look bigger?
Its convex lens bends light rays toward each other, so the eye sees an enlarged image of anything held close behind the glass.
How are traditional pysanky patterns made?
Lines are drawn on the egg with melted beeswax, and the egg is dyed several times from the lightest to the darkest color before the wax is removed.
Is it safe to use a magnifying glass in sunshine?
A magnifying glass can focus sunlight into a hot spot that burns paper, so children should never point it at the sun or leave it lying in direct sunlight.
