Decorated Egg Tucked into an Open Backpack

The backpack is drawn large, with a carry handle, two shoulder straps and a zippered front pocket with a pull tab. Its main zipper is open across the top. Inside sits an oversized Easter egg decorated with bands of wavy lines and rows of round dots. A five-petal flower rests against the egg on the left, and two pointed leaves stick out of the bag on both sides, which makes the scene look like the end of a springtime egg hunt.

Egg Decorating Around the World

People decorated eggs long before Easter existed: engraved ostrich eggshells about 60,000 years old have been found in South Africa. Later, eggs became a Christian symbol of new life. In Ukraine and nearby countries, artists decorate eggs with a wax-resist method, drawing lines in melted beeswax and dipping the egg in dyes from light to dark.

Natural materials give surprisingly bright dyes. Onion skins turn eggs golden brown or deep red, beet juice makes them pink, turmeric gives yellow, and red cabbage, oddly enough, dyes white eggs blue. Egg hunts and egg rolling are popular Easter games as well; in the United States, children have rolled eggs on the White House lawn in most years since 1878.

Spring Colors for the Egg and Backpack

  • Easter egg: pastel pink, lemon yellow or sky blue with contrasting wavy lines and dots
  • Backpack: bright red, navy blue or grass green with a darker front pocket
  • Zippers and pull tabs: silver or black
  • Flower: white, sunny yellow or lilac petals with an orange center
  • Leaves: fresh spring green
Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you dye Easter eggs with natural colors?
Simmer the dye material in water with a splash of vinegar, strain it and soak hard-boiled eggs in the liquid; the longer they soak, the deeper the color.
Who invented the zipper found on backpacks?
Whitcomb Judson patented an early slide fastener in 1893, and Gideon Sundback designed the modern zipper with interlocking teeth in 1913. The name zipper caught on in the 1920s, and zips were later fitted to bags, jackets and backpacks.
Why are eggs a symbol of Easter?
An egg holds new life, so it became a symbol of spring and rebirth. For Christians it recalls the resurrection, and in many traditions eggs were also a special treat after the weeks of Lent, when people often gave them up.
