A Ladybug Celebrating the Letter B

The cheerful ladybug stands on two short legs and holds a balloon string in each raised hand. Its round face has big sparkly eyes, long lashes and a wide open smile, and two antennae with round tips curl upward toward the balloons. The shell is divided down the middle by a straight line and carries six round spots, three on each side. Each balloon has a small knot and a shiny curved highlight. The page is made for practicing the letter B, since balloon, bug and beetle all begin with it.

How Ladybugs Help Gardens

Ladybugs, also called ladybirds or lady beetles, are small beetles of the family Coccinellidae, and more than 5,000 species are known worldwide. Their hard, spotted outer wings, called elytra, protect a pair of thin flying wings folded underneath. When a ladybug takes off, the elytra lift up and the delicate wings unfold from beneath them.

Many ladybugs and their larvae feed on aphids, tiny insects that suck sap from plants, and a single adult can eat dozens of them in a day. Their bright red and black colors warn birds that they taste bad, and when disturbed they can release a bitter yellow fluid from their leg joints.

Natural Colors of the Ladybug and Balloons

  • Ladybug shell: bright red or orange-red with glossy black spots
  • Face: soft cream for a cartoon look, or black with white patches like a real ladybird
  • Legs and antennae: black or charcoal gray
  • Balloons: two different bright colors such as blue and yellow, with the highlight left white
  • Balloon strings: gray or light brown
Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Which words in this picture start with the letter B?
Balloon, bug and beetle all start with B, and a ladybug is a small beetle. Children can say the words aloud, clap on the B sound and then look for other things around the room that begin with B.
Do the spots on a ladybug show its age?
No. The number and pattern of spots depend on the species, and some ladybugs have no spots at all. A ladybug develops its colors within hours of leaving the pupa and keeps them for the rest of its life.
Who made the first rubber balloons?
The scientist Michael Faraday made the first rubber balloons in 1824 in London and used them in experiments with hydrogen gas. Toy balloon kits for children went on sale the following year.
