Cicada Pushing a Pile of Lemons
A friendly cicada with huge round eyes, long curved antennae and a wide smile stands on its back legs and presses its front feet against a big lemon. Two more lemons lie in front of it, so three oval fruits sit together at the bottom of the page. The cicada's long wings show a clear pattern of veins, and its body is divided into neat segments. Each lemon has pointed ends and tiny dots across the peel, leaving large rounded spaces to fill.
Soft C, Singing Insects and Sour Fruit
Cicada and citrus, the family name of lemons and oranges, both begin with the letter C. Before e, i or y the letter usually makes a soft S sound, while before a, o or u it sounds like K, as in cat and cup. The word cicada even shows both sounds: a soft C at the start and a hard C in the middle.
Male cicadas sing with tymbals, ribbed plates on the sides of the body that muscles click in and out hundreds of times a second, and some species are louder than 100 decibels. The little dots on a lemon peel are oil glands filled with fragrant oil, which is why a scratched lemon smells so strong.
