An Open Clamshell Phone and Its Case
The phone is shown unfolded. Its upper half holds a large empty screen with a narrow earpiece slot at the top, and two small hinge knuckles join it to the lower half. There, a round navigation button sits in the middle between four side keys, and rows of oval buttons make up the keypad below. All the buttons are left blank, so children can color them plainly or add their own numbers and symbols. On the right stands a soft pouch with a rounded flap fastened by a round snap, just the right size to slip the folded phone inside. The thick outlines and wide spaces suit preschoolers who are learning to stay inside the lines.
How Flip Phones Changed Mobile Calls
The Motorola StarTAC, launched in 1996, is widely regarded as the first true clamshell mobile phone. It weighed only about 88 grams, very light for the time, and it could be folded small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. Folding designs protected the keys and screen from scratches and let people end a call simply by snapping the phone shut.
Flip phones stayed popular well into the 2000s. The thin Motorola RAZR V3 of 2004 sold well over 100 million units. Touchscreen smartphones later took over, but the idea returned with modern foldable phones that bend a flexible screen in half.
