A Fox Cub Sheltering from the Rain
The little fox sits upright on the forest floor with its bushy tail curled out to one side. Big round eyes, a small smile and soft tufts of fur on the cheeks and chest give it a gentle look, and its pointed ears peek up beneath the leaf. The fox grips the leaf stem in one paw, and the broad leaf with clear veins arches above it while raindrops fall all around and drip from its edges. A tree stump with growth rings stands on the right, and fallen leaves and small tufts of grass lie along the bottom of the page.
How Red Foxes Handle Wet Autumn Weather
The red fox has the largest natural range of any wild carnivore, living across Europe, Asia, North America and North Africa. Its coat has two layers: long guard hairs that shed water and dense, woolly underfur that traps warm air. During heavy rain, foxes usually rest in sheltered spots under bushes, fallen trees or in a den, and in cold weather they curl up and wrap their bushy tail, called a brush, around their nose and paws.
Fox cubs are born in spring, and by autumn they are nearly the size of adults and ready to look for a territory of their own. In autumn these omnivores eat berries, fallen fruit and beetles as well as mice and voles.
