Snail Crawling Along the Garden Path
A big snail with a friendly face stretches its body across the page. Its round shell curls into a tight spiral and is marked with wide bands, while two long stalks on its head end in little round tips. The path beneath it is dotted with specks of soil and grit, a lobed oak leaf lies in the front corner, and a flat pebble rests on the right. Tufts of grass and a small bush grow in the background, framing the scene with a few easy shapes.
Life Inside a Spiral Shell
A land snail keeps its shell for life. The shell grows at the opening as the snail gets bigger, and in most species it coils to the right. The eyes sit at the tips of the two long upper tentacles, while the shorter lower pair is used for smelling and feeling the ground.
Snails glide on one wide muscular foot, and the slime they produce reduces friction and protects the body from sharp grit. Inside the mouth is a radula, a ribbon covered with thousands of tiny teeth for scraping leaves. In dry spells and in winter, land snails seal the shell opening with a hardened layer of dried mucus called an epiphragm.
