Facts about sunflowers
The common sunflower, Helianthus annuus, produces a flower head made from many small individual flowers rather than one single flower. The outer ray florets form the large petal-like ring, while the center contains many disk florets. After pollination, many of the disk florets can develop into seeds. Young sunflower plants may turn toward the sun as they grow, while mature flower heads often keep a more fixed direction. Sunflowers are available in more colors than just bright yellow, including cream, orange, bronze, and deep red varieties.
