Three Roses in an Open Hamper
The lid of the hamper is propped open behind the flowers, and every side of the basket is drawn with a neat woven pattern of flat strips. Three large roses with layered, spiraling petals fill the opening, surrounded by pointed leaves with clear veins. A small clasp hangs on the side of the basket. In the foreground lies a folded blanket with a checked pattern and a fringe along one edge, and a plain mug with a handle stands on the right, ready for a picnic drink. The many petals and the woven strips create plenty of small spaces for patient coloring.
Wicker Weaving and Garden Roses
Wicker is a method of weaving rather than a single material. Baskets like this one can be made from willow rods, rattan, reed or other flexible plant stems that are soaked to make them bend. The craft is very old: woven wicker objects, including chests and baskets, were found among the treasures in the tomb of the Egyptian king Tutankhamun.
Roses have a long history too. The genus Rosa includes well over a hundred wild species, and most of them have simple flowers with just five petals. Garden roses such as the ones in the basket were bred over centuries to carry many more petals, arranged in the tight spirals that make them so easy to recognize.
