What is shown in the scene

The picture shows three large rose buds on tall stems standing beside a simple garden rain gauge. The buds are still closed, so their layered petals are mostly tucked inside the outer shape. Two serrated rose leaves spread near the lower parts of the stems. At ground level, a few tufts of grass and several small rounded stones sit around the base. Above the rain gauge is a rounded cloud releasing several visible raindrops. The rain gauge is plain and simple, with no written markings. The white background leaves plenty of open space and keeps the rose buds, leaves, gauge, grass, stones, cloud, and raindrops easy to identify.

Rose facts

Roses belong to the genus Rosa and are woody flowering plants found naturally across much of the Northern Hemisphere. A rose bud protects the developing petals before the flower opens, and green sepals usually surround the outside of the bud. Rose leaves commonly have toothed, or serrated, edges like the two leaves shown in this scene. Many roses produce prickles on their stems; botanically, these are different from true thorns because they grow from the outer tissue of the stem. Roses have been cultivated for centuries for their flowers, fragrance, and garden value.

Color ideas

  • Rose buds: deep red, pink, peach, yellow, cream, or three different shades.
  • Stems and serrated leaves: fresh green, olive, or dark forest green.
  • Rain gauge: pale blue, gray, clear-looking white, or another light neutral.
  • Cloud and raindrops: soft blue-gray for the cloud and blue for the drops.
  • Grass and stones: varied greens for grass with beige, gray, or brown stones.
