A Rose Wreath Ready for the Garden
A circular wreath made of five large roses and many pointed leaves sits upright in the tray of a wheelbarrow, rising well above its rim. Each rose shows tightly curled inner petals surrounded by wider, open outer petals. The wheelbarrow has a single spoked wheel at the front, a long handle and a small metal leg that keeps it steady. To the right stands a watering can with a curved handle and a long spout ending in a perforated sprinkler head. The open middle of the wreath and the plain background make the flowers stand out clearly.
Roses and the Rose on a Watering Can
Roses belong to the genus Rosa, which includes more than three hundred wild species and tens of thousands of garden varieties. Fossils show that wild roses existed millions of years before people began growing them, and gardeners in ancient China, Persia and Rome all cultivated roses for their scent and beauty. After the petals fall, many roses form round fruits called rose hips, which are rich in vitamin C.
Gardeners share a fun connection with this flower. The perforated cap on the end of a watering can spout is also called a rose. It breaks the stream into gentle droplets, so seedlings and loose soil are not washed away.
