Ladybug Holding On to an Acorn Cap
A smiling ladybug with large sparkling eyes, long lashes and two antennae ending in round tips sits on top of an acorn. Its domed back is covered with round spots, and its small feet grip the scaly cap. The acorn below is smooth and oval with a pointed tip, while the cap is drawn as rows of overlapping scales. Two wavy-edged oak leaves spread out behind the acorn, and a short twig with a small side branch lies in the lower corner.
Ladybugs, Acorns and Autumn
The ladybug's hard, spotted back is a pair of wing cases called elytra, which lift up to free the thin flying wings folded underneath. There are about 6,000 kinds of ladybugs, also called ladybirds, and many of them eat aphids, the tiny sap-sucking insects that damage garden plants. Their bright red and black colors warn birds that they taste bitter.
Acorns are the nuts of oak trees, and the scaly cap holding each one is called a cupule. Jays and squirrels bury acorns to eat in winter, and the ones they forget can sprout into new oaks. In autumn, adult ladybugs look for sheltered cracks in bark, leaf litter or window frames, where they often spend the winter packed together in groups.
