Ladybug on a Glossy Chestnut

A large ladybug stands on top of a smooth, rounded chestnut, gripping it with thin jointed legs. Its domed wing covers are decorated with big round spots, and smaller spots appear on the shield behind its head. The beetle has large friendly eyes with bright highlights, a small mouth and two curved antennae. To the left lies an open husk covered in sharp spines, with another chestnut still tucked inside. In front, a broad leaf with a toothed edge and clear veins rests on the ground.

Why Ladybugs Wear Spots

Ladybugs are not true bugs but small beetles, and more than 5,000 species live around the world. Their bright red or orange color and black spots act as a warning to birds. When threatened, a ladybug can release drops of bitter yellow fluid from its leg joints, a defense called reflex bleeding. The number of spots depends on the species and has nothing to do with the beetle's age.

Gardeners welcome ladybugs because both adults and larvae eat aphids and other plant pests, and a single ladybug can eat thousands of aphids during its life. When autumn arrives, many ladybugs gather in groups under bark, in leaf litter or in sheltered cracks, where they rest through the cold months.

Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a ladybug a bug or a beetle?
It is a beetle. Its hard, spotted wing covers protect a pair of thin flying wings that unfold when it takes off.
Where does the chestnut in the picture come from?
Chestnuts grow inside prickly husks on tall trees. In autumn the husks ripen, split open and drop their shiny nuts to the ground, just like the open husk beside the ladybug.
Do ladybugs help gardens?
Yes. They eat aphids, scale insects and mites that damage plants, so many gardeners see them as natural pest control.
