Close-Up of a Ladybug on a Leaf
The beetle is drawn large and close, so its domed wing covers fill much of the page. A center line splits the shell into two halves, each marked with big round spots. The small head peeks out in front, with shiny round eyes and short antennae ending in little knobs, and the shield-like plate behind it carries two pale patches. Jointed legs grip the leaf on both sides. Underneath, the maple leaf spreads out with pointed lobes and veins fanning out from the stalk, while a smooth pebble and two oval seeds lie near the bottom edge.
Why Gardeners Welcome Ladybugs
Ladybugs, also called ladybirds or lady beetles, form a family of about 6,000 species found around the world. Many of them feed on aphids, tiny sap-sucking insects that weaken plants, so a single ladybug can eat thousands of aphids during its life. That is why gardeners and farmers see them as helpful neighbors. Their bright red and black colors are a warning to birds: when threatened, ladybugs release a bitter yellowish fluid from their leg joints.
Maple leaves are just as easy to recognize. The sugar maple is the source of maple syrup, and a stylized red maple leaf has been at the center of the flag of Canada since 1965.
