A Toy Robot Out for Kite Flying

A cheerful toy robot runs across a grassy hill, one big boot lifted in mid-step. Its square head has a ball-tipped antenna, round bolts on each side, large shining eyes and a wide open smile. The robot's arms and legs are built from ribbed, segmented sections, and its chest carries a square panel with a round button. One round hand holds the kite string high, while the other grips the line lower down. Up in the sky flies a diamond-shaped kite with crossed spars and a tail tied with two little bows, next to a fluffy cloud. A single daisy-like flower and tufts of grass complete the scene.

Where the Word Robot Comes From

The word robot was introduced by the Czech writer Karel Capek in his 1920 play R.U.R., short for Rossum's Universal Robots. His brother Josef suggested the name, based on a Czech word for forced labor. In the play, the robots are artificial workers made in a factory.

Real robots arrived decades later. The first industrial robot, Unimate, started work on a General Motors assembly line in 1961, handling hot metal parts. Today robots vacuum floors, help surgeons, sort parcels in warehouses and even explore the surface of Mars.
