Toy Robot Jumping Rope with a Big Smile

The robot has a square head topped by a short antenna with a round tip, round ear discs on each side, big shiny eyes and a wide open smile. On its boxy chest sits a square panel with a large circle in the middle. Its arms and legs are made of ringed segments, and it grips a rope handle in each hand while the rope swings in a high arc over its head. One chunky boot kicks up in front as the robot hops forward. A ball with a curved stripe lies on the ground at the lower left, and a flower with round petals and two leaves grows at the lower right.

Why Jumping Rope Is Great Exercise

Jumping rope is one of the oldest playground games and one of the most efficient workouts. It strengthens the heart and lungs, helps build strong bones and trains coordination, rhythm and balance, because the hands and feet must keep time with the turning rope. Boxers have used it for decades to sharpen their footwork and stamina.

For real robots, jumping is surprisingly difficult. A walking or hopping robot relies on sensors such as gyroscopes and accelerometers to track its balance, and its computer must adjust the motors in fractions of a second to land safely. Some modern humanoid robots can now run, jump and even perform backflips.
