Friendly Ghost Among the Greenhouse Pumpkins

A round-eyed ghost with an open, happy mouth floats near the glass roof and spreads its arms wide. Below it, two large pumpkins with deep ribs and curled stems sit on the greenhouse floor. A watering can with a round sprinkler head stands in front, and a vine with broad leaves and spiral tendrils climbs the frame on the right beside a planter box. The panes of the walls and roof are drawn as simple rectangles, giving the whole scene a clear, orderly background.

Pumpkins, Tendrils and Warm Glass

Pumpkins belong to the gourd family, together with cucumbers, melons and zucchini. Their vines hold on to supports with curly tendrils like the ones in the picture, and because the plants are killed by frost, gardeners often start the seedlings under glass in spring.

A greenhouse stays warm because sunlight passes through the glass and heats the soil and plants, while the closed walls stop the warm air from drifting away. Carving lanterns for Halloween began with turnips in Ireland and Scotland, and in North America pumpkins took over because they were bigger and easier to hollow out.

Natural Colors of the Scene

  • Greenhouse: white or grey frames with pale blue panes
Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sprinkler on a watering can called?
Gardeners call it a rose. Its many small holes break the water into a gentle shower that does not wash away soil or seeds.
Is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable?
Botanically it is a fruit, a type of berry called a pepo, because it grows from a flower and holds the seeds, even though it is cooked like a vegetable.
Why did people start carving pumpkins at Halloween?
The custom came from Irish and Scottish lanterns carved from turnips, and settlers in North America switched to the larger local pumpkins.
