A Monster Shopping for Apples

The monster's round body is covered in fluffy, tufted fur, and two curved horns poke out of the top of its head. Its huge round eyes look up happily, and its wide open smile shows two small teeth. One paw lifts a fresh apple with a leaf on the stem, while the other rests at its side. On the right, a wooden stand with a scalloped, striped awning holds a slatted crate piled with apples, and two wooden baskets bound with hoops sit in the foreground, both brimming with fruit. With its friendly face, this monster is more cuddly than creepy.

Apples and Autumn Harvest Fun

Apples have a long journey behind them. Their main wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, still grows in the mountain forests of Central Asia, especially in Kazakhstan, and traders carried the fruit west along ancient routes. Today there are thousands of named apple varieties, from tart green cookers to sweet red eating apples.

Apples also star in a classic autumn game. In apple bobbing, played at harvest parties and on Halloween, players try to catch apples floating in a tub of water using only their teeth. The game works because roughly a quarter of an apple's volume is air, which keeps the fruit bobbing on the surface.

Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this monster scary?
Not at all; it has round eyes, a wide smile and soft fur, so it looks more like a plush toy than a spooky creature.
Why do apples float in water?
About a quarter of an apple's volume is air trapped between its cells, which makes it lighter than the same amount of water.
Where did apples first grow?
The wild ancestor of today's apples comes from the mountains of Central Asia, especially Kazakhstan, where wild apple forests still grow.
