A Full-Blown Rose Beside a Mailbox on a Post

A single large rose fills most of the page, its petals curling outward in layers around a tight spiral at the center. The strong stem carries two wide pointed leaves with clear veins, and tufts of grass grow around its base. To the right, a small mailbox with a rounded top stands on a wooden post, its flag lifted upright. A trail of flat stepping stones leads across the lawn toward it, adding simple oval shapes at the bottom of the page.

Roses and the Rural Mailbox

The rose genus, Rosa, includes more than a hundred wild species and tens of thousands of garden varieties bred over centuries. The sharp points on a rose stem are prickles, outgrowths of the stem's outer layer that help the plant scramble upward and discourage grazing animals. After the flowers fade, many roses form round red fruits called hips, which are rich in vitamin C.

The rounded mailbox shape was designed by Roy J. Joroleman and approved by the United States Post Office in 1915, and its curved roof lets rain and snow slide off. When the owner raises the flag, it tells the mail carrier that there are letters inside waiting to be collected.

Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the flag on the mailbox raised?
A raised flag signals to the mail carrier that there is outgoing mail inside to pick up.
Are the sharp points on a rose stem really thorns?
Botanists call them prickles because they grow from the outer skin of the stem, while true thorns are modified branches, like those on a hawthorn.
Which countries have the rose as a national flower?
The rose became the national floral emblem of the United States in 1986, and it has been a symbol of England for centuries.
