A Three-Tower Sandcastle by the Sea
The castle has a tall central keep with square battlements and two rounder side towers, each crowned with a pointed roof and a waving pennant. Arched windows dot the walls, and a wide arched gate with a plank door opens onto the sand. In front of the walls, a bucket is filled to the brim with sand, a scallop shell lies half buried, a starfish rests on a small dune and a princess figure pressed from a sand mold stands on the right. Behind the castle, gentle waves roll in, the sun peeks out from behind fluffy clouds and seabirds glide over the water.
The Science of Building with Sand
Damp sand holds a shape because thin films of water form tiny bridges between the grains, and surface tension pulls the grains together. Dry sand has no such bridges, so it pours away, while sand that is too wet turns into a runny slurry. Physicists at the University of Amsterdam reported in 2012 that surprisingly little water, roughly one part to a hundred parts of sand, is enough to make remarkably strong sand structures.
Sand sculpting is also a competitive art. In 2021 a sandcastle in Blokhus, Denmark, was measured at just over 21 metres (about 69 feet) and entered Guinness World Records as the tallest ever built.
Natural Colors of the Beach Scene
- Sandcastle and dunes: warm beige, golden tan or pale honey, a shade darker where the sand looks wet
- Pennants on the towers: bright red, royal blue or sunny yellow
- Sand bucket: cherry red or turquoise plastic
- Scallop shell and starfish: coral pink, cream and soft orange
- Sea: turquoise near the shore, fading to deeper blue
- Sky: pale blue with white clouds and a lemon-yellow sun
