Tupandactylus in a Side Profile Stance
Positioned to showcase its head structure, this prehistoric reptile highlights one of the largest crests relative to body size known among extinct creatures. The standing position emphasizes its compact body and long neck under the weight of the crest.
Remarkable Attributes of Tupandactylus
Fossils of Tupandactylus found in Brazil showed preserved soft tissue containing melanosomes, proving its giant crest possessed colorful patterns. This giant sail was supported by two long bony struts extending from the snout and skull. Unlike predatory carnivores with sharp teeth, Tupandactylus had a short, horn-sheathed beak designed for foraging.
