Hippo Wading Through the Water

The hippo stands in side view with its head turned slightly to the right. Ripples spread around all four legs, showing that the animal is in shallow water. Reeds and grasses grow near the water on either side. Behind the hippo are a tall, flat-topped rock formation, rolling hills, and clouds across the open sky.

How Hippos Spend Time in Water

Hippos stay in rivers and lakes for much of the day because water helps protect their skin from heat and drying. Although their heavy bodies are well suited to moving along the bottom, they must return to the surface to breathe.

Natural Colors of a Hippo Landscape

  • Hippo skin: slate gray, gray-brown, or dusky purple-gray
  • Muzzle and areas around the eyes: soft pinkish gray
  • Inner ears: muted pink
  • Water: blue, green, brown, or a mixture of reflected colors
  • Reeds and grasses: green, tan, or golden brown
Questions and answers

Questions and Answers

Can hippos breathe underwater?
No. They hold their breath while submerged and rise to the surface for air, sometimes doing so while still asleep.
Why are a hippo’s eyes, ears, and nostrils high on its head?
Their position allows the animal to see, hear, and breathe while keeping most of its body underwater.
What do hippos eat?
Hippos mainly graze on grasses after leaving the water, usually when the air is cooler.
