Curling Player on the Ice
Curling is a winter sport played on a specially prepared ice surface. Teammates work together to deliver heavy granite stones toward a circular target while maintaining control and balance on the ice.
Interesting Facts About Curling
The granite used to make official curling stones comes almost exclusively from a single small island in Scotland named Ailsa Craig. Players sweep the ice ahead of a moving stone to slightly melt the ice surface, which reduces friction and allows the stone to travel farther and straighter.
Real Colors of Curling Equipment
- Curling stone handle: often red, blue, or yellow for team identification
- Curling stone body: gray granite with a polished surface
- Curling broom handle: fiberglass or carbon fiber in vibrant team colors
- Ice sheet markings: clear white ice with painted red and blue circles
