What is in the picture?
The squirrel is the main subject of this autumn scene. It sits beside a low tree stump and gathers three broad leaves in its front paws so they spread outward like a fan. Two fallen leaves lie in front of the squirrel. Small tufts of grass, rounded stones, low bushes, and two simple clouds add a little outdoor detail without taking attention away from the animal and the leaves. The large leaf shapes, fluffy tail, paws, stump, and open spaces make the scene easy to recognize and give plenty of clear areas for different autumn colors.
Squirrel facts
Squirrels are rodents with strong front teeth that keep growing throughout their lives. Their bushy tails help with balance when they climb and jump, and the tail can also provide extra warmth when the animal rests. Many tree squirrels store nuts and seeds in separate hiding places and return to them later. Squirrels rely on a keen sense of smell to help locate food. In autumn, deciduous leaves may appear yellow, orange, or red as green chlorophyll breaks down and other pigments become easier to see.
Color ideas
- Use reddish brown, gray, or warm tan for the squirrel.
- Try orange, gold, red, and rusty brown across the three large leaves.
- Make the stump light brown with darker rings or bark marks.
- Use muted green or olive for the small grass and bushes.
- Keep stones in soft gray, beige, or brown shades.
- Leave the clouds white or add a very pale blue around them.
