Big Pumpkin on a Wooden Rope Swing

A round, deeply ribbed pumpkin sits in the middle of the swing seat and fills almost the whole page. Its thick, curved stem twists upward, and the grooves between the ribs divide the pumpkin into wide sections that are easy to color. The seat is a single wooden plank with lines of wood grain, and two twisted ropes pass through holes at each end and rise to the top of the picture. Maple leaves lie on the ground in the lower left corner, while a small leafy shrub peeks in from the lower right.

Pumpkins from Ancient Fields to Autumn Porches

Pumpkins belong to the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, together with cucumbers, melons and zucchini. They were first grown in the Americas: squash seeds found in a cave in Mexico show that people were cultivating these plants about 10,000 years ago. A pumpkin vine produces separate male and female flowers, and bees carry pollen between them so the fruit can form.

A pumpkin is about 90 percent water, and its roasted seeds make a crunchy snack. Growers who compete for the heaviest pumpkin have raised giants weighing more than 1,200 kilograms (2,600 pounds). Carving jack-o'-lanterns comes from an old Irish and Scottish custom of hollowing out turnips, which moved to pumpkins in North America.

Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable?
Botanically it is a fruit, because it develops from a flower and holds the seeds inside. In the kitchen it is usually cooked like a vegetable in soups and roasted dishes, and it also goes into sweet pumpkin pie.
Why are most pumpkins orange?
The orange color comes from carotenoids, the same natural pigments that color carrots. Not every pumpkin is orange, though: some varieties ripen white, pale green, blue-gray or striped.
How can you tell when a pumpkin is ripe?
A ripe pumpkin has an even, deep color, a hard rind that resists a fingernail and a stem that has turned dry and woody. It also sounds hollow when you tap it.
