Finishing Touches on the Family Christmas Tree

A bearded father in a cozy sweater stretches up to straighten a five-pointed star at the very top of a small Christmas tree. He smiles as he works, and the ribbed cuff of his sleeve shows beneath his hand. Kneeling at the bottom, his young son looks up with a happy face while both hands hold the tree stand, which rests on splayed metal legs. The fir is trimmed with round baubles hanging from little caps and with loops of beaded garland that wrap around the branches.

Where Christmas Tree Traditions Come From

Bringing an evergreen tree indoors and decorating it at Christmas became popular in German-speaking lands in the sixteenth century. The custom spread through Britain after an 1848 illustration showed Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children gathered around a decorated tree at Windsor Castle, and families in Britain and America soon copied it.

Glass baubles also have German roots. Glassblowers in the town of Lauscha began making ornaments in the mid-1800s, and their shiny hollow balls were later exported around the world. The star on top usually represents the Star of Bethlehem from the Christmas story, while some families prefer an angel.

Questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dad doing in this picture?
He is straightening the star at the top of the Christmas tree while his son holds the stand steady so the tree does not tip.
Which trees are commonly used as Christmas trees?
Popular choices include the Nordmann fir, the Fraser fir, the Norway spruce and the Scots pine, thanks to their neat cone shape and fragrant needles. Firs usually hold their needles longest indoors.
Why does the tree need a stand?
A stand keeps the trunk upright and stops the tree from falling over. Many stands also hold water, which helps a freshly cut tree stay green for longer.
