What is in the scene
The princess stands next to a short flagpole and grips the rope with both hands. She looks upward as the large plain flag rises along the pole. Behind her runs a crenellated castle wall with the familiar alternating high and low sections along the top. A rounded bush grows to the right, and the courtyard floor is covered with simple stone paving. The scene stays open and uncluttered, so the princess, rope, pole, flag, castle wall, bush, and paving can all be seen clearly.
Flagpole and castle facts
Many flagpoles use a rope called a halyard to raise and lower a flag. The rope runs through a pulley near the top of the pole so a person can pull from below while the flag moves upward. Crenellations are the repeated raised and lowered sections along the top of some castle walls and towers. Historically, these openings formed part of defensive architecture, while today the pattern is also strongly associated with the appearance of castles. Courtyards inside fortified buildings were often paved or packed firm to provide a practical open area between structures.
