The Steel Musical Triangle with Beater
The triangle is an essential percussion instrument made from a single rod of steel bent into a triangular shape with one open corner. It hangs suspended by a loop or cord and is played using a matching straight metal rod called a beater.
Fun Facts About the Musical Triangle
Even though the triangle appears simple, its open corner allows the steel rod to vibrate freely and create complex harmonic overtones. Orchestral musicians strike the sides or tap inside the angles to create rapid ringing sounds called tremolos. The instrument can cut through the sound of a full orchestra because of its high frequency range.
Real Colors of a Musical Triangle
- Steel triangle bar: Metallic silver, shiny chrome, or dark steel gray
- Metal beater rod: Polished silver or gray steel
- Hanging cord or loop: Black nylon, dark brown leather, or white string
- Rubber handle tip: Black or red rubber cap
