A zebu on the plains

The zebu stretches across most of the scene, with its body shown from the side and its face angled outward. Its horns, large ears, strong neck, and characteristic hump identify it as humped cattle. Folds of skin are visible around the neck and front of the body. A thick band of grass covers the ground beneath the animal, while the open area above remains free of other scenery.

Lesser-known facts about zebu cattle

A zebu’s hump stores fatty tissue rather than water. These cattle are well adapted to warm climates, partly because their loose skin and other physical traits help them manage heat. Their large ears can also release body heat into the surrounding air.

Natural colors of a zebu and the plains

  • Zebu coat: white, light gray, reddish brown, dark brown, black, or patterned
  • Hump and neck: generally the coat color, sometimes shaded more deeply
  • Horns: cream, pale gray, or tan, often darker near the tips
  • Hooves: dark gray, brown, or black
  • Plain grass: green during wet growth or golden brown in dry conditions
Questions and answers

Questions and answers

What makes a zebu different from many other cattle?
A zebu has a noticeable hump above its shoulders, loose skin beneath its neck, and often large drooping ears. These features are common among cattle adapted to hot regions.
What do zebus eat?
Zebus are herbivores that mainly graze on grasses. Like other cattle, they chew cud to digest tough plant material efficiently.
Are zebu horns the same on every animal?
No. Their size and shape can vary by breed and individual, and some zebus may have much shorter horns than others.
