Farm Pig in a Muddy Pen
This illustration features a domestic pig resting inside a muddy farm pen. The animal sits near its wooden pigsty and a sturdy feeding trough placed along the enclosure boundary.
Why Pigs Roll in Mud
Pigs lack active sweat glands, which makes it difficult for them to cool their bodies in warm weather. Rolling in wet mud helps regulate their internal temperature while creating a protective layer that guards their sensitive skin against sun damage and biting insects. Once the mud dries on their skin, pigs rub it off against fence posts to clean themselves.
Colors of Pigs and Farm Pen Structures
- Domestic pig skin: soft pink, light peach, or spots of black
- Muddy ground: rich dark brown or damp clay gray
- Feeding trough: weathered gray wood or dark metal
- Wooden pigsty: natural oak brown or rustic reddish timber
